At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
