Tetris Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
